Surtout porté dans l'Ille-et-Vilaine (également 14), rencontré aussi sous la forme Hoguerel, c'est sans doute un toponyme avec le sens de petite colline (vieux norois haugr = hauteur). Autre possibilité, pour M.T. Morlet : diminutif du vieux norois hôgr (= nonchalant, paresseux). Un hameau s'appelle le Plessis-Hogrel à Domalain (35).
